Zezão é um pintor. Sua técnica multicromática vêm da dificuldade que o artista tinha em comprar a tinta spray para trabalhar. Por muito tempo, Zezão só pintava com os restos de latas doados pelos amigos.

ZEZÃO , 34, is one of the leaders of Brazilian abstract graffiti. His trademark arabesques have roots in the Brazilian style of tagging letters called “pixação”. His most striking works are creations in the São Paulo sewer system and subterranean water ducts.

Zezao paints prolifically in well-hidden places, from the abandoned ruins of the Carandiru Prison to the depths of São Paulo's sewers. Painting in the sewers is not for the faint-hearted and proper equipment is essential. Undeterred by flash flooding or the risk of diseases, Zezao has made the sewers his own personal world of exploration with very few painters foolhardy enough to follow.In the sewers he paints organic shapes that he calls “flops” and with bigger murals he has developed a distinctive psychedelic style. In a city that is often unforgiving, he makes art in the streets “to leave his personal brand and feel like a part of this city that casts people away”.

José Augusto Capela aprendeu a ser artista nas ruas de São Paulo e pelo seu lado mais escuro, através da autêntica pixação paulistana. Sua assinatura era “vicio pif dst” (algo como “vicious, pintores infratores ferroviários, destroy) e ele subia em prédios e lugares proibidos ou deteriorados para marcar a sua grife. Nesse ambiente Zezão acaba desenvolvendo uma caligrafia original, entortando suas letras de maneira muito pessoal.

Sua caligrafia de pixo vai se transformando em arte abstrata. As formas arredondadas de agora lembram letras, mas de uma língua desconhecida, surreal. Zezão faz seus flops apenas em lugares lúgubres ou extremamente deteriorados, escombros de prédios abandonados, becos embaixo de viadutos ocupados por mendigos ou em corredores do sistema de águas pluviais de São Paulo. Esse sistema transformou antigos rios da cidade em verdadeiros esgotos.

Seu trabalho toma uma dimensão político-social, pois o artista lida com os parias urbanos que habitam esse mundo e denuncia a existência de tal miséria, através das fotos que tira para documentar esse seu trabalho inacessível ao público comum.

Além da caligrafia fantástica, Zezão é também um pintor. Dono de uma técnica muito apurada com o spray, ele dá vida às imagens psicodélicas que povoavam seu mundo. Técnica desenvolvida “na raça”: como não tinha dinheiro para comprar tantas cores quanto gostaria de usar em suas pinturas, começou a pedir restos de latas de spray para os seus amigos. Com pouca tinta nas latas, mas com muitas cores disponíveis, Zezão cria suas multicoloridas “fumacinhas”.

A obra de Zezão está sendo escrita em letras rudes mas muito poéticas. Artista auto-didata, intuitivo, abstrato, Zezão leva o site-specific e a arte performática às últimas conseqüências. Muitos das questões fundamentais à arte contemporânea estão sendo discutidas nas instalações, fotografias e telas de Zezão.

José Augusto Capela ( aka Zezão, lê-se Zeh zah o, but the right accent can be learned with Mr Levine.) his work has born directly from the streets of São Paulo, and from its darkest side: by the authentic paulistan pixação (the unfamous paulistan gang throw up, not exactly a kind of art, more like true vandalism, see about).
His signature was “vicio pif dst” (“vicio” is something like vice, “pif” are initials of “railroad infractors and painters”, and “dst” are an short for destroy) and he used to climb up buildings and forbidden or wasted places to throw up his “grife” (this crew-tags)
In this ambient Zezão ends up developing an original calligraphy, bending his characters in a very unique way.

His “pixo” calligraphy started to evolve into an abstract art. The present days round figures remind us of letters, but from an unknown surreal alphabet.
Zezão distinguishs his style even more when he starts to do throw ups only in lugubrious, extremely wasted places, just like the São Paulo underground pluvial water system. This system was turning the old rivers of the city into true sewers.
His work takes a social-politic dimension, because the artist deals with the bums and addicts that inhabit this world and denounces the existence of such misery, by pictures he takes to document his inaccessible-for-the-common-people work.

But Zezão also wanted to paint using sprays and express the psychedelic images that inhabited his imagination. He didn’t had money to buy as much colors as he wanted, so he started to ask for rests of spray cans with his friends.
With just a little few paint in each can, but with lots and lots of different colors, Zezão creates a personal technique, his multi-colored “fumacinhas” (little smokes).
Results in a color explosion, with more decorative and elaborated characteristics, which he paints in allowed places, more carefully, and side by side with his psychedelic friends

The both worlds of Zezão live in a schizophrenic harmony. And all this different work appears also in his fine art work, with photos, paintings and calligraphy, site-specific work, performances and installations.
